FAYETTEVILLE – The University of Arkansas men’s tennis head coach Robert Cox announced the signing of Juan Marino and Johan den Toom for the 2013-14 tennis season.

“We are very pleased to sign Juan and Johan,” Coach Cox said. “Both of these young men bring exuberant talent to program and we are just really excited for them to join the Razorback family.”

Marino, a native of Barranquilla, Columbia comes to Arkansas being one of the top-ranked players in his country. Ranked 120 in ITF Juniors, Marino has quickly moved up the charts with such a strong playing resume from the past year and thus far in 2013. His career-high ranking thus far is 97. So far in 2013, Marino made the semi-finals for the Costa Rica Bowl grade 1 in singles play. In doubles, he has made it to the semi-finals in Bolivia B1.

“Juan will bring a lot to the Razorback tennis team,” Coach Cox said. “He is a proven top-100 Junior in the world and that is what we need right now. He also is very academically motivated and that is exactly what we are looking for in a student-athlete.”

Johan comes to Arkansas from the Netherlands and is currently playing ITF Futures, Men’s Opens and Netherland’s Men’s Tournaments. In 2012 den Toom reached the semi-finals of the Netherland’s Men’s National Championships. Johan is also very involved in his academics and plans on studying economics at Arkansas.

“Johan possess incredible upside,” Coach Cox said. “I think he is going to fit in real well here. He has a big exciting game; huge forehand and a big serve and that is what we are needing. We are looking for some firepower and I think Johan can bring that to our team.”

Arkansas finished its 2013 spring season with a 16-16 record while also collecting 17 doubles point wins. Juniors Manfred Jeske and Mike Nott currently ranked 24 in doubles play and await the announcement for the draw of the NCAA Tournament that begins May 10 in Champaign, Ill.
